PocketMap

Offline OpenStreetMap maps for iPhone: download an area, route on the phone, find the way back with no signal.

PocketMap downloads an area of the OpenStreetMap map to your iPhone, along with a routing graph, so the map, walking, cycling and driving routes keep working with no connection. A separate set of black field screens (compass, daylight left, north from the sun or stars, your coordinates) helps you get back when the network is gone. About 10 MB installed, no account, no analytics.

What it does

Download an area for offline use

Pick a search result or the visible map, see the tile count and size before you start, then use the map with no network. OpenFreeMap terms cap one download at 3,000 tiles or 50 MB.

Routes computed on the phone

Each downloaded region also gets its routing graph, so Walk, Bike and Drive run on the phone in a few milliseconds with no network. Hosted graph coverage today: every US state, DC, Puerto Rico and Turkey.

Blackout mode

Four black screens that never touch the network: compass with a target (saved spot, back along your track, a GPX waypoint), daylight left versus the walk back, north from the Sun, Moon or Polaris, and your position as text to send by SMS.

GPX tracks

Import GPX from Files or 'Open in PocketMap', record your own track while the app is open, export it as GPX, and follow a track with the compass.

Optional wind and air-quality overlay

Off by default. When on, it shows wind arrows on AQI-coloured dots from Open-Meteo for the visible map and keeps the last answer for offline.

Privacy

No account, no analytics, no crash reporter, and nothing reaches us. The app talks only to public map, search, routing and weather services, and your position leaves the phone only when you ask for a route the downloaded area cannot cover.

  • Account: none. The app has no sign-in and no account.

FAQ

Does PocketMap work with no signal?

Yes, for areas you downloaded first: the map, routes inside the area, GPX tracks and the blackout screens all work in airplane mode. Areas you did not download show nothing offline.

Where do offline routes work?

Routing graphs are hosted for every US state, DC, Puerto Rico and Turkey. Elsewhere the app asks the public Valhalla server when you are online and draws a straight line with bearing and distance when you are not.

Does it track me?

No. There is no account, analytics or crash SDK. Your position is sent out only when you ask for a route the downloaded graph cannot cover.

How big is a download?

The app shows the tile count and size before you start. One download is capped at 3,000 map tiles or 50 MB under OpenFreeMap's terms; routing-graph tiles are about 30 KB each.
