Air Signal: privacy policy
Last updated November 2, 2026. Checked against the app's code on that date.
The short version
No account and no ads. To give you a forecast, the app sends the place you look at, rounded on the phone to about 1 km, to our server at airsignal.app. Sky photos pass through it once with faces painted over. A report carries a point rounded to about 1 km and no identifier.
- Account: none. The app has no sign-in and no account.
- What reaches us: The forecast place: coordinates rounded on the phone to 2 decimals (about 1 km) or a place name. Used to answer and cached by place for about 10 minutes, not stored with you.; Reports you send: kind, intensity 1 to 5, the minute observed, the point at 2 decimals, an optional sky smoke score. No heading, no photo, no install id. Kept 24 months.; A rate-limit code: a salted hash of your IP address, rotated daily and erased after 2 days.; Usage counts: app launched, forecast viewed, sky checked (see Analytics).
- Selling or sharing data: never. No advertising, no ad identifiers, no data brokers.
What the app sends to us
- The forecast place: coordinates rounded on the phone to 2 decimals (about 1 km) or a place name. Used to answer and cached by place for about 10 minutes, not stored with you.
- Reports you send: kind, intensity 1 to 5, the minute observed, the point at 2 decimals, an optional sky smoke score. No heading, no photo, no install id. Kept 24 months.
- A rate-limit code: a salted hash of your IP address, rotated daily and erased after 2 days.
- Usage counts: app launched, forecast viewed, sky checked (see Analytics).
What stays on your device
- The chosen place and whether to follow location (UserDefaults)
- Unsent reports queued for retry (up to 35 h)
- Exact GPS position (only the ~1 km rounding leaves)
- Photo EXIF: a library photo's GPS is used on the phone and only a ~1 km place is sent
- Faces in sky photos are painted over before upload
Other services the app connects to
Each of these receives only what is listed, plus the IP address any network request carries. Services run by others handle it under their own privacy policies.
| Service | What it receives | When |
|---|---|---|
Apple (MapKit) | The place-search text as you type, and map tile requests for the Map tab, which reveal the area you view | Place search and the Map tab |
TypeSafe (through our server) | A sky photo with faces painted over on the phone, cropped to the sky, at most 768 px, no EXIF, plus the ~1 km place. Our server passes it on once to score the smoke | Only when you press Check or pick a photo |
Permissions
iOS asks you before the app can use any of these, and you can change your answer in Settings at any time. The app keeps working without them, minus the feature that needs it.
- Location When In Use: Forecast for where you are and true north for the camera labels; optional, place search replaces it
- Camera: Sky tab
- Motion: Keeping fire/monitor labels on the horizon in the Sky tab
- Photo library (picker): 'Use a photo' for a sky check; only the picked photo is read
Analytics and crash reports
The app counts its own use with our self-hosted, open-source counter at analytics.superduperai.co (superduper-analytics). Each event carries its name, the app version, a timestamp and a random id created on first launch. That id lives only in the app, is deleted with it, and is not the advertising identifier or tied to any account. The server keeps the country Cloudflare reports for the request and does not store your IP address. No third-party analytics, no tracking across apps or websites. Air Signal sends three events: app launched, forecast viewed, sky checked. They carry no place, photo or report.
No crash reporter in the app. If you chose to share analytics with app developers in iOS Settings, Apple sends us anonymous crash logs; you can turn that off under Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements.
Where the forecast comes from
Our server combines public data: Open-Meteo and the CAMS model, EPA AirNow, NASA FIRMS fire detections, the US National Weather Service and Sensor.Community citizen sensors. They receive our server's requests, never your device's, and never anything about you.
Children
The app is for a general audience. It asks no one, children included, for a name, email, age or any other personal detail.
Deleting your data
Your chosen place and settings live on the device and go when you delete the app, as does the random counter id. Reports you sent carry no identifier, so we cannot find "yours" among them; they are kept 24 months and then deleted. The IP hash used against abuse is erased after 2 days. Questions: write to us.
